Prediabetes Diagnosis and Treatment to Avoid Type 2 Diabetes

In this article, we will talk about prediabetes conditions. Well, this is a phase when it is very much possible to bring the blood sugar levels back to normal. One just needs to focus more on what he or she eats. Moreover, one has to indulge in the right kind of exercise.

Basically, prediabetes is a stage before stepping into type 2 diabetes. You know type 2 diabetes could be a very serious problem for many people. This disease affects an individual badly if he or she has already been suffering from any other kind of disease like heart problems, cholesterol, high blood pressure, and many more.

What is Prediabetes?

It is actually a stage when blood sugar is not very high but it goes just a bit above the normal level. This is usually a situation of prediabetes. Although this also does not give any clear cut symptoms as type 2 diabetes, it is still way far less risky.

Remember that it is not fixed that one with prediabetes has to move to the stage of Type 2 diabetes. It completely depends on you. If you follow the right measures, then one doesn’t have to face too many complications.

We recommend that see your doctor and get tested whenever you doubt that you may have diabetes. This will help to tap diabetes condition before it moves to another stage. In many cases, it was possible to work out with patients when they are in the prediabetes stage. It is also possible that you don’t move to type 2 diabetes and come back from prediabetes only.

Generally, adults over 18 develop the prediabetes condition, but they are usually not aware of it because prediabetes condition also doesn’t show any symptoms same as Type 2 diabetes. But that’s why the tests are there. As diabetes disease has become quite common over the years, there is a need to be more cautious about its diagnosis, so that we can prevent it from advancing to a higher level.

How does the condition of Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes arise?

It is more or less the same in both, although they are both pretty different from each other. When we don’t know the condition of prediabetes, we don’t usually avoid food even with high in carbohydrates. But the food which is high in carbohydrates can even cause too much buildup of glucose in our body.

So, when you eat food, your digestive system breaks it into glucose which further enters the bloodstream causing the blood sugar levels to shoot up. Generally, if our body functions properly, then even the high buildup of glucose is managed by the insulin produced by the pancreas because the pancreas starts producing more of it seeing the demand of the body. But sometimes, when the pancreas is not able to fulfill the demand of insulin production, the flow of sugar entering in blood increases as it is not absorbed by cells.

In some cases, even cells cannot respond to insulin, although insulin is produced by the pancreas. This usually happens because cells become insulin resistant. In this case, also the body has to try to make more insulin. This impacts the functioning of the pancreas and it ultimately takes the form of either prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes.

Who suffers from a Prediabetes condition?

Prediabetes is a condition that has a close connection with fat or increased body weight. We have indexed for diabetes patients. It shows Body Mass Index in accordance to weight and height. People who are overweight or with extra fat around the abdomen can be at risk of prediabetes condition.

Even the females who suffered from gestational diabetes are also at risk of developing prediabetes. So, one has to be always very careful about increasing weight.

The diagnosis is important for Prediabetes

Diagnosis plays a vital role in prediabetes condition as it does not show up any symptoms. Sometimes you are already suffering from prediabetes without knowing. It is very easy for an individual to move to Type 2 diabetes from prediabetes condition. That’s why we always suggest that you go for a regular diagnosis for diabetes. If you have extra fat around the abdomen, then it becomes necessary that you should go for the checkups without delay, so that it can be caught and cured early.

Because there are no symptoms of prediabetes, you may have it without realizing it. That’s why it’s important to know your risk and ask your doctor about blood tests. Prediabetes is diagnosed when one or more screening tests (see “Testing for Prediabetes,” above) find blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but lower than those seen with type 2 diabetes.

There are different types of prediabetes conditions. Thus there are different tests too. We have A1C, Fasting Plasma Glucose, and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. FPG measures blood glucose after eight hours of fasting to check if you have higher than normal glucose in your body. If it is over 99 mg/dl and below 126mg/dl, you may be suffering from impaired fasting glucose. This is the situation when the liver becomes insulin resistant and a higher amount of glucose is produced by it during fasting.

The second test OGTT is attempted just after two hours of drinking a sugary beverage just to see if it elevates the sugar level. The glucose level is high after eating something. It again means that you have impaired glucose tolerance and your body is resistant to insulin because the extra glucose is not being absorbed by your body efficiently. In other words, it shows that your body is producing insulin as the blood sugar level are not extremely high but higher than normal. This is a clear-cut sign of insulin resistance, which is the very first stage of the body becoming less immune to what occurs in it.

Once it is sure that you have or don’t have a prediabetes condition, you still need to go for tests later in the future maybe after 6 months or so which is suggested by your doctor seeing your reports.

The Treatment for Prediabetes

We talked about in previous paragraphs that the best way of combating the condition of prediabetes is to work on your diet as well as do some regular exercise. In the condition of any type of diabetes, you cannot let too much fat accumulate in your body. You have to try to maintain it all the time.

We don’t say that you go for very intense exercise, but you can at least go for moderate exercise. It is just that you have to be more active than usual. Lifestyle changes are the best remedy in reversing the prediabetes condition without any doubt.

Why we suggest you do at least 150 minutes of exercise per week because regular exercise increases the insulin sensitivity of cells. We are too technology-driven these days, we have to slow down a bit when it is about our health. If we see in general, there will be no health problem, if we fix the problem of our lifestyle. When you can see that you have begun to accumulate fat around your stomach, why don’t you do something about it? It is the sign of the beginning of any problem you may face in the future.

If you cannot develop a rigid exercise plan, then use a pedometer to see how many steps you take. Counting your steps is one very good thing you can do to enhance your fitness.

Your doctor sometimes even prescribe you medicines to quickly bring your blood sugar level down as some people cannot do too much exercise. But it is seen that diabetes medicines can show results temporarily. If you do regular exercise and have some crucial lifetime changes, then is helpful in the long-run.
